The fine print

The terms on which guests may visit the lounge and use this website, set down in as plain a form as the subject permits.

Terms

“Terms for visitors and for users of this website”

What these terms cover

These terms apply to anyone who visits the lounge at 82 Nicholson Street or who uses this website. By entering the house or sending a booking request, a person accepts them. They are meant to be read, and I have tried to write them so that they can be.

Everything takes place offline

Every game, tournament and event described on this website is held in person, on the premises, and nowhere else. The lounge offers no game over the internet, by telephone application or by any other remote means, and the website does nothing but describe the house and receive booking requests.

Liability

The house takes reasonable care of guests and their belongings but is not responsible for loss or damage that its own negligence did not cause, including property left unattended. Nothing in these terms limits any right that Australian consumer law gives a guest and that cannot lawfully be limited.

Text, pictures and design

Words, pictures and layout on this website are owned by the operator of the venue, or used with the owner's consent. A guest may read them, print a page for personal use and send a link to a friend. Copying them to another website, or using them to sell anything, needs written permission.

Nothing on this website is offered as professional advice, and menus, hours and the weekly program may alter without notice. Where the website and a telephone call disagree, the telephone call is correct, and the manager will confirm it in writing if asked.

The age limit

Admission is for persons aged 18 and over, in the counter hall and the board room alike. A guest may be asked for photographic identification at any time, and anyone unable to produce it will be refused admission, however well known to the staff and whoever accompanies them.

Rules of the visit

Guests are asked to follow the terms of play and the manners of the house, which are published on their own pages. The dealer's ruling at a table is final during a hand, and the manager may ask a guest to leave if their conduct disturbs others.

Where a guest is asked to leave, the manager will explain the reason on the spot and, if asked, in writing afterwards. The house does not publish names, keep a list of excluded guests or hold a grudge, and a guest who has been asked to leave may return on another evening and be welcomed.

Bookings

A booking is a request that binds the house only when the house has confirmed it. A table is held for fifteen minutes beyond the time agreed. No charge is made for booking, changing or cancelling, and guests are asked to tell the house promptly if their plans alter.

A party that arrives much later than agreed may find its table given to another, in which case the house will do its best to find another, and will say so honestly. Groups of ten or more are asked to confirm their numbers on the day, since the kitchen prepares for them from the afternoon.

Chips have no value

All play uses house chips with no cash value. They may not be bought, sold, exchanged or taken from the room. No stake is laid, no prize is awarded and no winnings are paid in any game or tournament, and the champion of the night receives a name on the board and nothing else.

Governing law

These terms are governed by Australian law. Any dispute is to be heard in the courts of Victoria, without prejudice to any right a guest may have under consumer legislation to bring a claim in another place. If any part of these terms is found to be unenforceable, the remainder stands.
